Phillies Break Schnied with an Early Outburst (159)

At the Linc, the Eagles had to pay up to the New York Giants for their miracle comeback last December at the Meadowlands.  Less than 2 hours away in New York, the Phillies defeated their New York counterpart when they jumped out to 9-0 lead over the Mets after 4 innings.  Mike Pelfrey was chased from the game early as he allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in 3 innings pitched.  Roy Halladay once again played the stopper role as he pitched 6 scoreless innings and allowed only 4 hits.  In addition, every Phillies starter recorded a hit.  The Phillies also recorded a hit in every inning.

In the 1st inning with 1 on and 1 out, Hunter Pence made up for his miscues yesterday by hitting a 2 run homer to put the Phils up by 2 early.  Ryan Howard singled, then Shane Victorino doubled to put runners on second and third with 1 out.  Raul Ibanez hit a sac fly to bring in Howard.  Carlos Ruiz who was 4-4 on the day led off the next inning with a single then advanced to second on a bunt.  After Rollins grounded out to move Ruiz to third, Utley got an RBI single to bring in Ruiz.  After Pelfrey got the first 2 out in the next inning, Ibanez singled then Placido Polanco doubled to bring in Ibanez.  After Pelfrey intentionally walked Ruiz, Roy Halladay singled to shallow right field, but Polanco was out at home when he tried to score.  D.J. Carrasco came in and allowed a leadoff single to Rollins then walked Utley.  Pence collected another RBI when he singled to bring in Rollins then Howard singled to score Rollins.  1 out later, Carrasco loaded the bases when he hit Ibanez.  Ruiz ended the scoring when he singled to score 2 runs which put the Phils up 9-0.  The Phillies offense would collect 6 more hits in the final 5 innings.

Through the first 5 innings, Halladay allowed no runs and 3 hits.  He did get into some trouble in the 6th inning though when Jason Pridie led off with a double then 1 out later, Jose Reyes singled to put runners on the corners.  After Ruben Tejada lined out, Halladay loaded the bases with a walk to Willie Harris, but struck out Nick Evans to end the inning.  Antonio Bastardo’s rough stretch continued in the next inning when he allowed a walk to Mike Baxter then Ronny Paulino homered.  Pridie tripled then pinch hitter Valentino Pascucci singled to score Pridie.  After Reyes walked, Vance Worley came in from the pen and retired the next 2 to shut the door.  Worley allowed a leadoff single to Evans then a double to Justin Turner for the Mets to get to within 5.  Ryan Madson, who has not pitched since the first game on Tuesday, allowed 2 singles to start off the 9th inning.  He got the next 3 out to end the inning.

Things are starting to get interesting in the Wild Card races.  The Braves got shutout 3-0 by the Nats while the Cardinals beat the Cubs 3-2.  Now the Braves lead in the Wild Card has been trimmed to 1 game.  The Braves will end the season at home against the Phillies while the Cardinals end the season against the Astros in Houston.  In the AL, the Red Sox lost game 1 of a doubleheader to the Yankees 6-2 while the Rays won 5-2 over the Blue Jays.  The Angels lost 6-5 to the Athletics.  At this moment, the Red Sox have a 1/2 game lead over the Rays for the Wild Card and the Red Sox could be tied with the Rays if they lose the second game of the doubleheader to the Yankees.  The Angels are 2 games out of the Wild Card.
