Pence’s Missed Opportunity, Miscue Costs Doubleheader Sweep (158)

The Phillies lost the nightcap 6-3 behind a huge 3rd inning for the Mets.  The Phillies got to Dillon Gee early, but were unable to hold on to the early lead thanks to a costly error with 2 outs in the 3rd.  This loss is the Phillies 8th straight since clinching the division.

The Phillies missed out on a huge scoring opportunity in the 1st inning when Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco hit back to back singles then Dillon Gee walked Chase Utley to load the bases.  However, Hunter Pence hit into a 1-2-3 double play to prevent a run from scoring and John Mayberry popped out.  As a result of the Phillies having the bases loaded and no outs, they got NOTHING.  The Phillies did get on the board in the next inning when Ross Gload led off with a double then Brian Schneider singled him to third.  Wilson Valdez drove in the first run with a single before Joe Blanton reached on a ground out (Schneider out at third).  Jimmy Rollins singled in Valdez for the innings second run before Shane hit the ball hard, but right at second baseman Justin Turner who threw to shortstop Ruben Tejada to double off Blanton for the final out.  Gload collected another double in the next inning to drive in another run.  The Phillies recorded 7 hits through the first 3 innings, but were held to only 3 in the final 6 frames.

Joe Blanton was impressive in his “start” in the bullpen game as he pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed 1 hit and struck out the side in the 2nd.  David Herndon came on in the 3rd inning and allowed a leadoff single to Jason Pridie then struck out Gee.  After Pridie was out at third on a fielders choice, Herndon walked Turner.  Willie Harris hit a deep fly ball to Hunter Pence who misread or lost it, and it deflected off his glove which resulted in a 3 base error for Harris to cut the Phillies lead to 1 run.  Herndon then issued a walk to David Wright before Kyle Kendrick took over and allowed a double to Nick Evans to score Harris and a single to Josh Thole to score Wright and Evans.  The Mets got 1 more run in the following inning on Tejada’s RBI single.  Michael Schwimer, Michael Stutes, and Justin DeFratus pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief and did not allow a baserunner.  Stutes dealt 2 innings.
